When runners talk about their favorite races, they rarely mention permits, logistics, or course maps. They talk about how smooth everything felt—clear directions, friendly volunteers, safe roads, and a finish line that felt worth the effort. That experience doesn’t happen by accident!
At Running Tangents, we believe a great race is built long before the starting horn sounds. As a road race director, Mike’s role is to think through every detail ahead of time, so you can focus on what matters most: showing up, running your race, and enjoying the experience.
Planning Starts Months Before Race Day
A well-run race begins long before race day. Securing permits, collaborating with city officials, coordinating road closures, and working with timing and safety partners all take thoughtful planning. These early steps lay the foundation for a race that feels calm, organized, and welcoming.
Course Design Is Key
Clear signage, logical turns, well-placed water stations, and accurate distances are essential. A confusing course or poorly marked turn can quickly derail a runner’s experience. Running Tangents is committed to thoughtful course design to help runners feel confident and supported from race start to finish.
Volunteers Are the Backbone of Race Day
Volunteers help with packet pickup, water stations, course marshaling, and finish line support. At Running Tangents, we prioritize communication and training, so volunteers feel confident in their roles. When volunteers are informed and prepared, runners feel encouraged and guided and races run smoother!
Communication Is Everything
From pre-race emails to race-morning announcements, clear communication helps everyone know what to expect. When runners arrive informed, race day flows more smoothly for participants, volunteers, and staff alike.
Why the Details Matter
Runners may not see everything happening behind the scenes—but they feel it. A well-organized race builds trust, comfort, and confidence. At Running Tangents, our goal is simple: to create events where runners leave saying, “That was a great race—I’d absolutely do it again.” Because when the details are handled with care, the experience speaks for itself.
